Excerpt from the Bureau of Labor Statistics - Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-2009 Edition
Job Outlook
Employment of insurance sales agents is expected to grow about average for all occupations through 2016, and opportunities will be favorable for persons who are college graduates and who have sales ability, excellent interpersonal skills, and expertise in a wide range of insurance and financial services.  Most individuals and businesses consider insurance a necessity, regardless of economic conditions, so agents are not likely to face unemployment because of a recession

Excerpt from TDI Texas Department of Insurance
Requirement for Most Licensees: In general, most licensees holding any combination of licenses for LAH, PC, MGA, LH Counselors, and adjusters of all types including public adjusters, must receive credit for at least 30 hours in each two year renewal cycle. Courses must be taken from the course lists referenced on this site, or be an otherwise certified course or a qualifying courses. Only 15 of the hours may be self study, and 2 must be in ethics/consumer protection. Holders of limited lines and county mutual licenses must complete 10 hours per two years with 2 hours of ethics. Only 5 hours may be self study. At this time, TDI does not have the means to track credits earned by individual licensees. It is the licensee's responsibility to retain certificates of course completion in case of audit.

Please note that to maintain your license, whether or not you are using it, you must meet your continuing education requirements.

There is no continuing education "grace period". Once the expiration date has passed, a violation exists. CE cannot be made up after the expiration date. The fine for not doing the required continuing education is $50 per deficient hour. Call 512.322.3503 for a payment voucher to accompany your payment, which will clear the violation.

Before consulting a general course list, you may wish to see if any company you represent or a professional association you belong to is a provider. Passing a part of many professional designation programs is a way to earn credit. A professional designation program is defined in the rules. It is (A) nationally recognized in the insurance industry, and is (B) issued by an entity that maintains a not-for-profit status and has been in existence for at least five years.

Up to four hours of continuing education credit can be earned by an agent who is an active member of a state or national insurance association. For information about how the credit can be earned, you can review Chapter 4004.0535 of the Texas Insurance Code and §19.1011 and new §19.1020 of the Texas Administrative Code. The rule adopting the new provisions can be viewed from the following location on our website: http://www.tdi.state.tx.us/rules/2005/1229C-059.html.

"Qualifying" courses, not certified by TDI, may also be used for credit. Qualifying courses are insurance courses that are: (A) offered for credit by accredited colleges, universities, or law schools; or (B) part of a national designation certification program; or (C) approved for classroom, classroom equivalent, or participatory credit by the continuing education approval authority of a state bar association or state board of public accountancy; or (D) certified or approved for continuing education credit under the guidelines of the Federal Crop Insurance Corporation.

The following table summarizes the continuing education requirements for license holders:

Property/Casualty Insurers Lead In Adapting To Climate Change; However, Ceres Study Calls For Improvement In Coverage, Services
April 13, 2009
BYLINE: JEFF CASALE

Insurers are showing signs of trying to adapt their business models to issues related to climate change, but more work needs to be done as environmental liabilities increase, according to a report by the Boston-based Ceres investor coalition.

From Risk to Opportunity: Insurer Responses to Climate Change 2008, outlines 643 climate-related activities that 244 insurers from 29 countries put in place over the past year to deal with growing exposures resulting from climate change. According to Ceres, insurers ``have begun to embrace a more sophisticated approach to climate change,'' but the industry is ``still in its infancy'' as far as product development, services and coverage.

``In many ways, insurers are still catching up to their customers, who are rapidly changing the way they construct buildings, design products and produce energy in response to climate change,'' Evan Mills, the report's author and a scientist at the U.S. Department of Energy's Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, said in a statement.

Property/casualty insurers are dictating much of the industry's climate change-related activity in offerings of auto, homeowner and commercial coverage, products and services, according to the April 2 report. Some commercial offerings include coverage for wind and solar power production shortfalls, premium discounts for energy-efficient building renovations, carbon capture and storage insurance.

Life and health insurers, however, are ``far behind'' other insurance segments, the report states; there has been little to no activity in certain segments, including offshore property, aviation and ocean marine, the report said.

Low Pressure May Mean More Sales

April 21, 2009

How do you act towards health insurance sales leads? Do you try to force them into buying or are you laid back? Many agents believe that they have to use high pressure, hard sale tactics in order to get the job done. If this works for you there is nothing wrong with keeping this in your arsenal as you move forward. But believe it or not, in today’s day and age of high competition, you should realize that low pressure tactics may be the way to go.

Consumers don’t want to be pressured. Not only does this make them feel on edge, but they know that there are other agents who will not force their hand. In other words, if you are not liked by a consumer they can find several other agents who will be more than happy to work with them. For this reason you need to be very careful about how much pressure you put on a consumer. If you go overboard you may run into a situation in which consumers are telling you “no thanks” and then moving on.

If you are going to rely on low pressure sales tactics you need to draw the line somewhere. Remember, there is a difference between low pressure and sitting back, crossing your fingers, and hoping for the best. At some point you will need to ask the health insurance sale lead what they are thinking, if they want to buy now, etc.
